Uganda: Truckers Still Driving the HIV Pandemic

While the nationwide battle to reduce HIV rates continues, it has been revealed that knowledge on HIV does not always translate into safer sexual behaviour for the most-at-risk populations (MARPs). This is noted in a recently released KMCC abridged report titled; 'Long-distance truck drivers and HIV/Aids in Uganda: synthesis of information and evidence to inform response.' While there is no doubt that semen, pre-ejaculate (pre-cum), and blood can contribute to the risk of HIV transmission through anal sex; it seems there is less clarity among frontline service providers on whether rectal fluid should also be included on this list. This article looks at what rectal fluid is, whether or not it can contain and transmit HIV, and the implications for prevention education.

Together, we can make it happen

We can end HIV soon if people have equal access to HIV drugs as treatment and as PrEP, and have free choice over whether to take them.

Launched today, the Community Consensus Statement is a basic set of principles aimed at making sure that happens.

The Community Consensus Statement is a joint initiative of AVAC, EATG, MSMGF, GNP+, HIV i-Base, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, ITPC and NAM/aidsmap
